Audubon Seawatch Docent Training

  • Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History Bird Room 165 Forest Ave Pacific Grove, CA, 93950 United States (map)

Join Amanda Preece from Monterey Audubon for an overview of the Seawatch Docent Program. All people are welcome, whether you have birding experience or not!

The Point Piños Seawatch Program is the only land-based seabird census on the whole west coast! Due to the unique geography of Monterey Bay, Monterey Audubon is able to count migrating seabirds as they fly south past Point Piños in Pacific Grove.

Our seabird count runs from November 1 - December 15, with a professional seabird counter present every day from dawn to dusk. Their task is a challenging one, but they are aided by the presence of knowledgeable volunteers who help with public outreach, educating on topics ranging from MPAs (Marine Protected Areas) to birds to even where the closest bathroom is.

We will train volunteers who can come out to Point Piños for short shifts and conduct outreach, especially in the morning and evening when it is most important to have a buddy present with our counter.

To register, just email Amanda at montereyaudubon@gmail.com.

In addition to the in-person training, there is a Zoom training available. Get the Zoom link by emailing Amanda at montereyaudubon@gmail.com.
